Responsibilities to Consider...  

To Yourself:

  • Never lose self-control. Know what your abilities are and stay within them.
  • Always follow the 4 Cs: be careful, considerate, capable and courteous.
  • Take a hunter education course and continue to learn new skills. Seek additional training in outdoor skills, first aid, CPR, marksmanship, etc.
  • Know what to do in an emergency.
  • Get in shape before your hunt.
  • Establish and follow a good hunting code-of-conduct.

To Other Hunters:

  • Always be sure of your target. Stay within your zone of fire.
  • Know where your hunting partners are and when they will be back. Tell them your information and do what you say you are going to do.
  • Never be rude or hog shots. Do not disturb or cross areas where others are hunting.
  • Never drink alcohol or use drugs before or while hunting.
  • Always offer to share the work and any game meat taken.

To Non-hunters:

  • Never display dead game in or on vehicles when traveling.
  • Always be courteous and be aware of how your image might affect non-hunters.
  • Always clean up and dress appropriately in public.
  • Never brag or tell hunting "war stories"  in a public place.
  • Always drive carefully and courteously to and from your hunting area.
  • Always show you care about wildlife.

To Landowners:

  • Always respect landowners' privacy and safety.
  • Always secure permission
  • Always leave landowners' property and equipment in as good or better condition than you found it.
  • Always pick up any trash.
  • Always repair and/or report previous acts of vandalism.
  • Leave gates as you find them.
  • Always show appreciation for the privilege of hunting on private property. Offer to share game. Send small gifts at different times of year. Help with chores.

To the Resource:

  • Always learn as much as possible about all wildlife.
  • Always take care of wildlife habitat on private and public lands.
  • Always practice or work with conservation efforts.
  • Understand and obey the hunting and game laws.
  • Report hunting violators.
  • Know your effective range and only take shots that are within your range.
