Wildlife Classification

In hunter education, wildlife includes all animals that do not depend directly on people for daily survival. Wildlife does not include domestic animal such as horses, cattle, dogs or cats.

This website provides information on the identification of animal and bird species that are classified as game. Game species are those animals that are hunted, trapped or harvested for control purposes. We will also provide information for some endangered and non-game species.

The majority of wildlife in North America is not hunted. State and provincial hunting laws and regulations help manage wildlife in North America and regulate hunting of game species. Hunting plays an important role in scientific wildlife management.

Get a copy of your state or provincial hunting laws and regulations so that you can learn which species are classified as game animals.
