Size:

  • 23 in. (58 cm).
  • Weighs 2 1/2 to 5 lb. (1 to 2 kg).

Distribution in North America:

Habitat:

  • Marsh tundra and wetlands. Spends the winters near the Gulf of Mexico, around fields with water nearby.
  • Feeds on waste grain and grasses.

Notes:

  • Similar to the snow goose, but smaller, with a shorter neck and rounder head.
  • Nests in depressions on the ground that are lined with vegetation and down feathers.
