Habitat:

  • Along shallow coastal marshes, ponds and near rivers; winter habitat includes croplands, pastures and open lands.
  • Feeds mostly on vegetation such as grasses, grains, sedges, aquatic plants and berries. Occasionally eats insects and mollusks.

Notes:

  • Nests on the a ground in a slight depression lined with feathers, grasses and down feathers.
