Size:

  • 21 in. (53 cm).
  • Weighs about 2-1/2 lb. (1 kg).

Distribution in North America:

Habitat:

  • Estuaries and open ocean; may be found in freshwater lakes in summer.
  • Eats mussels, clams and scallops.

Notes:

  • Most widespread scoter.
  • Often migrates in long, single-file lines.
  • Female is very similar to female surf scoter, but has a white wing patch (although this patch may not show until the bird takes flight).
